I wonder sometimes whether those connections could ever be rebuilt, or if the versions of us that existed inside the system were the only ones who could have been that close.

I tend to think the second but I think rebuilding connections is possible if both people are participating in building them no matter what versions of ourselves we are. I dare say that they will not have the same type of closeness though. At least they wouldn’t for me if I reconnected with my past people because the context was the bonding factor.
